Suspicions of plague arose in Russia’s Irkutsk region following the death of anti-plague institute employee Darya Shipilova. We collect the information, sources and full chronology of events here.
Asked about the Irkutsk case, China’s foreign ministry referred to cooperation with Russia on preventing and controlling infections. Its response gave no diagnosis or details of special measures.
Health Minister Marjorie Michel said Canada was following the situation with international partners. In her assessment, there was no risk to Canada at the time of her statement.
According to Rospotrebnadzor, more than 90% of contacts were released from observation and almost 5,000 tests found no dangerous pathogens. No final public medical conclusion on Shipilova’s death is available.
The World Health Organization requested test results, contact information and verification of a report of a second pneumonia case. Russia reported no plague, but the full picture for international assessment remained unavailable.
Most contacts had completed medical observation, according to the Russian agency. The winding down of measures was not accompanied by publication of a complete postmortem conclusion.
After Russia reported no plague, the international organization continued verification. It requested detailed test results and confirmation of a report of a second pneumonia case.
The United States president relayed Russian assurances of control while also expressing a need for further information. His remarks contain no medical assessment of his own.
Xinhua relayed Russian statements and information from the World Health Organization. An additional check also located China’s official foreign-ministry response of 6 October.
The World Health Organization said it did not yet have the full picture. A report about a second ill employee requires verification and does not confirm plague.
