Hong Kong steps up checks on Russian arrivals and pneumonia surveillance after Irkutsk travel
The Centre for Health Protection of Hong Kong’s Department of Health announced stronger airport surveillance on 12 October: temperature checks on relevant Russian arrivals and assessment of symptomatic passengers. Travellers who visited Irkutsk Oblast within 14 days are urged to disclose that history.
Passengers with pneumonia symptoms will be referred to public hospitals after assessment. Doctors and hospitals will receive reminders to report unexplained pneumonia following Irkutsk travel within 14 days before symptoms. This is a travel-history window, not blanket 14-day quarantine.
The centre assessed the immediate local risk as low and reported no such notifications among arrivals from Russia in recent months. The deceased worker’s diagnosis remains unknown; precautionary measures do not confirm plague.
The Chinese statement appeared on 12 October at 15:30 and the English version at 16:25 Hong Kong/Irkutsk time (UTC+8): 07:30 and 08:25 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). Added 13 October.
