WHO: cause of death remains unknown and laboratory exposure cannot be fully excluded
WHO (World Health Organization)’s10October report says the Irkutsk laboratory worker’s cause of death remains unknown. Based on information from Russia’s national focal point, WHO has found no evidence of ongoing transmission, but confidence remains limited by the lack of a confirmed diagnosis.
Without an identified pathogen, WHO cannot independently judge whether seven days of contact monitoring excluded all plausible causes. The source of illness remains unknown, so laboratory-associated exposure cannot be fully excluded. This does not confirm an accident or plague.
WHO contacted Russia on3,5,6and7October, including to verify a purported second case, and received a response on6October. Following additional requests on7and8October, Russia’s national focal point under the International Health Regulations provided further information.
According to that Russian report, the patient and contacts were tested for multiple infections, including plague. Contacts included two COVID-19 (coronavirus disease2019) cases, three rhinovirus cases, one Haemophilus case and other opportunistic infections. Russia reported no tested high-threat pathogens and more than5500tests. Individual laboratory records are not included.
Russia also reported that the worker had not left Irkutsk Oblast in the two weeks before symptoms, two investigations found no biosafety incidents, and seven days of monitoring with daily testing had ended for all contacts. WHO attributes these accounts to Russian authorities.
Russia told WHO that only the admitting hospital was quarantined and no other facility faced additional measures. This differs from collected reports of hospital restrictions; unpublished orders leave the discrepancy unresolved. WHO gives2October as the death date; the UK report relays1October.
WHO calls for continued investigation of clinical specimens and epidemiological information, with reference-laboratory confirmation where needed. It has offered support on high-threat pathogens and biosafety. On available information it advises no travel or trade restrictions.
Dated10October2026; WHO’s official publication feed gives15:00UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), or23:00Irkutsk. Request and response dates are separate events. Added12October.
