A possible second-death report spread through agency coverage
On 7 October, Swiss news agency Keystone-SDA’s report on Swissinfo said WHO (World Health Organization) had requested information about a possible second pneumonia death. It attributed assessment of a media report as credible to Abdirahman Mahamud, director of WHO Health Emergency Alert and Response Operations. This is an agency account, not a verbatim answer independently checked against the recording.
The same wording appeared on news.de using dpa (Deutsche Presse-Agentur, German news agency) material. Its opening paragraphs match Swissinfo; independence of these reporting chains is unestablished. An English-language report appeared on AAP (Australian Associated Press, Australian news agency) and The Queenslander, credited DPA and with Reuters. Republications do not independently confirm a medical event.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus’s published 7 October opening remarks refer to seeking verification of reports of a second employee with pneumonia of undetermined cause. That text does not announce a second death. No medical document confirming it has been obtained; the complete recording of Mahamud’s subsequent answers has not been checked. The wording difference remains unexplained. The article about the opening remarks has been clarified; no published laboratory confirmation of plague has been found in the collected material.
