UK health agency changes “suspected plague” to “pneumonia of undetermined aetiology”

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA, a UK government agency) changed the Irkutsk event heading on 9 October from “suspected pneumonic plague” to “pneumonia of undetermined aetiology”. The official update log explicitly records the change.

The current report for 28 September–4 October stresses that media reports of plague have not been officially confirmed. It considers the probability of a case in someone returning to the UK very low.

The report’s account of illness, admission, death and contact monitoring links to EADaily, Interfax, Türkiye Today and The Moscow Times. These are media accounts relayed within an official document; it provides no new laboratory results. It does not explain why the heading changed.

The report gives 1 October as the death date, based on media reporting. The date remains disputed across sources. The heading change does not establish the cause of death. WHO (World Health Organization)’s 7 October statement also said information was insufficient for a full risk assessment.

First published 8 October at 14:30:07 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), updated 9 October at 08:41:46 UTC; in Irkutsk, 8 October22:30:07 and 9 October16:41:46. The public GOV.UK API (application programming interface) metadata confirms these times. The complete original edition was not obtained; the previous heading is documented by the official update log. Added to the research on 9 October.
