The Wall Street Journal, a United States newspaper, in a copy published by To Vima, described a diplomatic warning, citing United States officials. This is a more definite claim, but neither the communication itself nor proof of delivery has been published.

On October 7, Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said he had no information about the approach. His lack of knowledge does not prove that the communication was not sent.
