Saint Sebastian Interceding for the Plague Stricken, created by Josse Lieferinxe (b.1470s). Date completed: 1497-1499.  Medium: oil on wood.

In this piece, St. Sebastion, a Roman military officer, is shown praying for protection against the plague. Around him, victims are being buried. St. Sebastion is being pierced with arrows, kneeling before God. There is an angel and demon battling in the sky. Lieferinxe painted this as part of an altar piece dedicated to St. Sebastian for the church of Notre-Dame-des-Accoules in Marseille, France. This painting has vivid colors and intricate details, with the medium to convey the emotional intensity of the scene.
