Bubonic Plague & Black Death

The Black Death was a catastrophic event in the 14th century that had a profound impact on art and culture in Europe. Join me as I share some of the artwork  that shaped the artistic expression, influencing themes, techniques and patronage. The artists expressed their sorrows through Black Plague Art, capturing the spirit of an epidemic. In the wake of the Black Death, artists grappled with themes of mortality, the supernatural, the role of caregivers and religious art.

BLACK PLAGUE ART

Black Plague Art emerged as a powerful means for artists to express their sorrows and make sense of the catastrophic events caused by the plague. Initially, artists depicted the Black Death as a warning of Divine wrath upon sinners and society. Overtime, their focus shifted to empathy in the people suffering, connecting them with Christ and praising the heroic caretakers. The plague reinforced realism in art, used to empower and comfort those affected by the plague, and to show the resilience the community had. The themes in Black Death Art included death and torment, evanescence of life, supernatural elements, and the heroic caretakers during the plague. The Black Death profoundly shaped art, serving as a reminder of the catastrophic pandemic.
